TCP Group Shares their Vision of the Beverage Can Industry Driven by Innovation and Sustainability

31 October 2022

TCP Group attended the Asia CanTech 2022 Conference, where Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Saravoot Yoovidhya, delivered his leadership insights on the beverage can industry while encouraging synergies to build growth through “innovation and sustainability.” The company announced its goal to create a circular economy by incorporating the collection and recovery of waste into the recycling loop and producing several types of packaging to be 100% recyclable by 2024. In addition, TCP Group set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality for all its work processes in Thailand by 2050.

Asia CanTech 2022, a conference that brings together manufacturers and suppliers in the beverage can industry in the Asia-Pacific, was held in Thailand with more than 300 participants.

TCP Group, the leader in the energy drink business, is currently the dominant player in terms of market share with Krating Daeng (in the golden can) maintaining the number one position in China, Vietnam, and Malaysia, and second in Thailand. In addition, the success of ‘Sponsor,’ the first ready-to-drink bottled electrolyte drink in Thailand, is leading the segment with a 90% market share. Along with other participants, TCP Group attended the conference to exchange ideas and visions in building a cooperative network to further advance the beverage can industry.

As the first keynote speaker, Mr. Saravoot Yoovidhya’s remarks on “Energizing a Better World through Can Innovation,” discussed how to strengthen synergies in all sectors in the beverage can industry to promote innovation and sustainability for stronger businesses and a better future. “This year is a significant turning point in our corporate history as sustainability was adopted into our business strategy. Of course, the challenge is how to make our business grow while reducing our environmental and social impacts. We, therefore, announced a new purpose, ‘Energizing a Better World for All,’ to further grow sustainably as a company while creating a positive impact on society and the environment – locally and globally. This has resulted in our urgent action plan in sustainable packaging to achieve a circular economy, while we are developing 100% recyclable packaging by 2024,” said Mr. Saravoot.

TCP Group has solidified its market leadership by understanding consumer needs and the latest business trends, from developments in innovative production, new product presentations, or adjusting packaging designs to offer increased diversity. These efforts have led to increased partnerships on sustainable solutions. TCP Group is, therefore, focused on sustainable packaging by developing can product innovations for energy drinks which include:

  • Being the first company in Thailand to reduce the neck and lid of the stubby can from 206 to 202 many years ago.
  • Being the first company in Thailand’s energy drink market to reduce the thickness of aluminum cans, be it the stubby, sleek, standard, and slim types. The cans have been made thinner, from 0.275 mm to 0.260 mm currently, with a further reduction planned to 0.245 mm and will be completed next year.

In addition, the shift in production is being taken to promote the use of aluminum cans because they have a lower melting point than other metals and are endlessly recyclable. Most importantly, recycling aluminum requires up to “95%[1] less energy” than producing primary metals. As a result, TCP Group is focusing on the collection and recovery of used aluminum cans into the recycling process to provide an endless resupply. This includes the use of eco-friendly aluminum cans with the recently launched Red Bull Halls XS energy drink, which offers a refreshing and cool sensation with no sugar.

“Further challenges to achieving our sustainable business goals include ways to maximize recycling, reuse, and the disposal of packaging materials which promote a circular economy, and reducing carbon emissions as much as possible to mitigate the impacts of greenhouse gases which lead to climate change. A key component of this effort is how to make packaging recyclable. TCP Group has responded by building collaborations, within the organization and with several partners, to create real change that contributes to sustainable development,” concluded Mr. Saravoot.
